Geranium
Géranium - إبرة الراعي
Description
The geranium is a perennial or annual plant much appreciated for its colourful five petal flowers and fragrant foliage. It flowers abundantly from spring to autumn, in a variety of shades from red to pink, white and violet. The most numerous varieties are found around the eastern Mediterranean.
Easy to grow, it is equally at home in pots or in the ground and is ideal for embellishing balconies, beds and borders. Its foliage, sometimes aromatic, repels certain insects.
The nursery has pots of geraniums and their cousins, pelargoniums, which were planted as borders (near the British telephone box) to add colour to the garden paths. Pelargonium petals were also used to decorate eggs during Easter using their colour as a natural dye.

Poem
The Misunderstood Message
Disdainful of plants and animals in their filthy dunghills,
We believe to be mighty superior.
Our brain and reason set us apart
While our soul is unique.
But if we probe a little deeper
And look closely at their hidden folds
We would see in their apparent torpor
More virtue than we will ever possess.
The horse is prouder, the donkey more patient,
The dog more faithful and the bee wiser;
As for the plants that we believe to be of an unconscious order,
What is their fragrance but a message
Of joy and felicity singing to our hearts;
Could it not be the very soul of flowers?
