Chinese privet

Troène de Chine - الحناء الصينية

Description

Ligustrum lucidum

This leafy evergreen native to southern China is ideal for hedges. Easy to grow, the privet is considered invasive in parts of the world. In the summer, white flowers complement the glossy green leaves while in autumn, impressive cluster of purple berries appear. Watch out as these are toxic for humans. The privet is a popular choice for bonsai due to its ease of cultivation and forgiving nature, making it ideal for beginners.

Poem

The Good Seed

The bush’s little seed dying from a miserly soil,
Between the icy walls of a dreary tower bloc,
Seeks from the depths of its prison,
The Providential breeze.

But under the soaring shadow where fate has put it,
Cramped in a pot bereft of daylight
How can it unlock itself
And reach for the skies?

Now the wind of the good Lord blows in,
And beyond the horizon,
Carries it away in a whirlwind!

A fertile land has welcomed the immigrant;
Free, her rose has blossomed in the sun
Filled with butterflies!…
