Lemon tree

Citronnier - شجرة الليمون

Description

The lemon tree is a fruit tree with glossy dark green leaves and highly fragrant white flowers, often tinged with pink. It can bloom multiple times a year and simultaneously bear flowers and fruit, making it a particularly generous plant. Native to Southeast Asia, the lemon tree was introduced to the Mediterranean by the Arabs in the Middle Ages, and then spread across Europe. Since Charles Corm did not write about the lemon tree, we chose his poem on another citrus : the orange tree.

Poem

The Orange Tree

In the orchards of the old, beautiful Lebanon
Where the moon remains tender,
A skilled peasant, empties with his calloused fingers

A glorious orange to turn into a rustic lamp.
A faint, tenuous flame shines within,
Glowing red from the rind’s reflection,
While a perfume, sweet and undulating,
Exhales softly from the aromatic globe.
My dearest, so joyful and free under the sun,
Was as fresh and fragrant as the orange;
But bitterness has now replaced love,
And to please your destructive whims
My heart consumes itself in the night,
Burning its incense at your altar.
