Wisteria

Glycine - الوِسْتارية

Description

Wisteria sinensis

This climbing plant, which is not technically a tree - but rather a vine - can reach 20 to 25 meters in height. Native to China, it is known for its incredible flowers, which are usually lilac but can also be pink or white, and they cascade down to delight bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The Chinese wisteria is the most common, but there are also Japanese and Korean varieties.

Much appreciated by Charles Corm, the wisteria was initially planted in the garden and found its way to the gazebo.

Poem

A Tree’s Resurrection

The cold will be bitter and harsh;
The cold will be bitter and harsh;
Winter has stripped it bare.
Yet the tree knows it is no evil stroke of fate;
Quietly gathering its strength.

The bark may flake
The hail and frost may bite
But the tree patiently waits
Without a thought for death.

It will recover from the autumn and winter storms.
Its lively foliage plucked away
Will grow again in spring.

And when the snow is overpowering
The tree must garner all its energy
To grow its bright buds again!
